Our top makeup tips for acne prone skin:
- Look for makeup with salicylic acid and oil-free formulas
- Avoid products with silicones or mica
- Try non-comedogenic mineral makeup. Popular brands include Youngblood, Issada, Jane Iresdale and BareMinerals
Makeup and acne prone skin doesn’t always work well together. Often when we have a spot, we want to cover it up with concealer and foundation. However, some makeup brands may contain ingredients that can make your breakouts even worse.
Foundations can be heavy and clog the pores, powders can irritate sensitive skin, and concealer can only do so much. So, how can you avoid acne caused by makeup?
Look for makeup with salicyclic acid and oil-free formulas.
Unless they contain salicylic acid, try to avoid heavy liquid foundation makeup which can trap dirt and oil and block pores, leading to breakouts.
Salicyclic acid is an ingredient that can remove redness and inflammation by opening the pores.
Avoid products with silicones or mica.
If you're prone to clogged pores and sensitivity, stay clear of makeup with silicones and mica. Silicones can block pores and increase the likelihood of breakouts while Mica in powder makeup can irritate sensitive skin as the particles can be rough.
Try non-comedogenic mineral makeup.
Although non-comedogenic skincare products may not prevent acne, they do not promote pore-clogging and acne production in the way that cosmetic products do. Non-comedogenic ingredients and products are recommended for people who have oily or acne-prone skin. Use non-comedogenic products to keep pores clear of acne-causing bacteria and skin blemish free.
Makeup packaging is more important than you think.
While product formula is important so is the makeup packaging. Try makeup that comes in a pump and not a cushion or bottle. A pump means that you’re using your hands less and limiting the risk of bacteria transfer from your hands to your face.
Although non-comedogenic skincare products may not prevent acne, they do not promote pore-clogging and acne production in the way that cosmetic products do. Non-comedogenic ingredients and products are recommended by skincare professionals for people who have oily or acne-prone skin. Use non-comedogenic products to keep pores clear of acne-causing bacteria and skin blemish free.
